The Brain Drain Project Update
Hey there Brain Drainers!! Boy has it been a long time between blogs. I am truly sorry for this. Life really has gotten on top of me as many things in my personal life changed seemingly all at once. With that being said I’m going to take you back through the last couple of years. Yes, couple of years!! Time really does fly.
2019 saw Hydro Girl fly to a few events. We were very excited to be once again accepted to Comic Con Melbourne. This event is huge for our little comic that could. Not only for sales but it gives the hydro and disability communities a chance to come and meet us in person. These are always my favorite moments at events as making these connections with people and having them share their stories is what it’s all about for me personally. Melbourne was extremely successful as we sold a record number of comics and it was exciting to have people genuinely interested in the Hydro Girl concept and what she represents.

We were then invited to a community event called the Winter Soup Festival. This is held every year (Pre Covid) in a beautiful garden called the Seeds Community Garden in Brunswick, Melbourne. The atmosphere at this event is always electric with music, food and fellow creatives so needless to say we jumped at the opportunity to be a part of something so special. The event did not disappoint and it was fantastic to be able to share the Hydro Girl story and have her embraced by all that came to find out what she was all about.

In September of 2019 we travelled to Brisbane and took Hydro Girl to a Comic Con out of state for the first time! We were once again fortunate to be able to meet people in our community that had been following the Hydro Girl journey for a long time via our social media and the Hydro Girl story was very well received with fantastic sales over the course of the weekend. From memory, I don’t believe we had too many comics to take home which was a really exciting feeling.

In February of 2020 I ended up back in hospital having not only a revision but an insertion of a programable shunt. I had spent many years in chronic pain and had to fight with registrars and surgeons to get them to understand that something was not right with my shunt. Proving my point, a surgery that was supposed to be an hour and a half went for six...
This surgery although successful proved to be quite challenging from a recovery perspective as completely messed up my digestive system. I would normally only have six to eight weeks off after surgery and this time I went back to “return to work” program after twelve weeks!! My return to work meant I only did a couple of hours a day for a couple of days a week. During this time covid had also hit and everything had changed. Not only had they changed but the kept changing. The constant changes made it extremely difficult to remember anything. This did change over time and I went back to full time after about six weeks.
Brain Surgery #8, Might Have to change my name to Bionic Woman...
Through all of this John and I have kept chipping away at Issue 4 of The Adventures of Hydro Girl and it is looking visually stunning. I have personally found this issue a really emotional experience but both John and I are so excited for everyone to meet all our new characters!! We are also excited to announce that we will be releasing Issue 4 this December! We should have the comic completed by the end of this month so it will be all ready to lay out and send off to the printer. Pre-Orders will hopefully open mid-November.
